Did you know the designer behind it?
Three months ago, designer Adam Selman
created a dress that will be remembered for decades to come: the sheer
crystal-encrusted gown that Rihanna wore to accept her CFDA Fashion Icon
Award.
Known for that daring high-wattage glamour—the look caused a
#nipplegate fiasco after all—Selman’s spring 2015 collection showed a
different side to the designer. “I think our ideas overlap naturally.
I’m trying to make a differentiation from my costumes designs,” said
Selman. “I want to make sure I have my own voice with my label.”
Selman’s singular vision came through loud and clear in a
series of tweed mini overall dresses, sweatshirts embellished with
pearls, and trapeze ruffle dresses (a classic good-girl uniform) and
quite the change from his Bad Gal RiRi body-baring silhouettes. “I tried
to take that inspiration of the nostalgic look of the eighties and
seventies and transform it into the modern girl,” said..........................
Selman. “I think
more than I’ve done before, it is more easy relaxed and less sex, sex,
sex than the first two presentations.” Adding to that chic tomboy
sensibility, there were wide-leg linen pants and jersey dresses that
closed the show.
And yet even as the lights went down on the last looks, it was clear
that the show wasn’t over. Just minutes after he took his bow, Rihanna
arrived, creating a frenzy of flashing bulbs. Overall though, the real
showstopper here was Selman, a designer who knows what a cool girl
wants, whether she’s center stage or not.
